October/November 2010 Newsletter

From the desk of Pastor Lori

Our Mission Outreach is outstanding!  I am so proud of our congregation and the many ways we share our financial treasures as well as our time and talents.  Here is just a small list of the many ways we share our gifts:

Through the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ we support for our world:     Neighbors in Need, Our Church’s Wider Mission, One Great Hour of  Sharing,  Bethany Children’s Home, Lancaster Theological Seminary, Phoebe Home, special offerings for the disaster in Haiti ($500!), special offerings for Church World Service with blankets at Mother’s Day ($380!)  and Tools of Hope at Father’s Day ($370!)

We also support our world through Samaritan’s Purse:  Operation Christmas Child and special offerings from Advent and Lent.

In May this year, we collected shoes to support an organization called “Soles4Souls.”   They distribute one pair of shoes to people around the world every minute of the day!   Unbelievable – WE collected 23 packing boxes full of shoes!!  They are awaiting shipment to the home base of Soles4Souls in Alabama.  Awesome!

We support local ministries such as:  American Cancer Society (Daffodil Days), Washington Township Fire Company, The Hub, Northampton County Meals on Wheels (we sponsor a route!), Youth For Christ,  Safe Harbor (a homeless shelter in Easton), Slate Belt Ministerium for their financial assistance program for local folks in need, and our own food outreach – we deliver many bags of food each month to residents of the Bangor Area School district and the Pen Argyl School district (bring food each week to church so this ministry can continue).  We also distribute Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to local families in need.

We continue to collect soda tabs to share with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Hershey Medical Center Ronald McDonald House.

We support our own congregation by collecting Weis register tapes.  Weis donates to us a percentage of the purchase total.  We send Goodie Boxes to our college students twice per year.  Our Fellowship Committee conducts two rummage sales per year to share items with the community and bring finances into our treasury.  This effort also creates an outstanding sense of fellowship and purpose for our congregation.  We give Easter Baskets and Christmas gift bags to our Sunday School children and our homebound members in addition to the many other outreach opportunities our Sunday School provides for our youth – a fall hayride and pumpkin carving, bowling parties, programs in worship, and other parties throughout the  year.   The Sunday School also collects a special “Helping Hands” offering that is sent out at the end of the year.  The children decide where there is a special need so this offering can help our “neighbors everywhere.”

I’m sure there is more that I haven’t mentioned here, but you can see from this list, that we continue to live out our mission and purpose statement as quoted from the Constitution of the Church:

“The avowed purpose of this church shall be to worship God, to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and celebrate the sacraments; to realize Christian fellowship and unity within this church and the Church Universal; to render loving service toward all humankind; and to strive for righteousness, justice and peace.”

Are you proud to be part of our church family?  Are you ready to invite your friends and neighbors to share in this faith family of abundant grace and many opportunities for service?  As we move into this fall season of cooler weather, beautiful colors and thoughts of togetherness, think about those you know who need to know the Lord and who will benefit by getting to know him here at Flicksville.

Peace,

                        Pastor Lori

October 10th we will kick off our Operation Christmas Child (filling of shoe boxes).  Postage is still $7 per box.  There are already boxes in the Narthex.  Some are wrapped and some are from O.C.C. that they had printed.  Our deadline for filled boxes and postage is November 14th.  These will be dedicated at the altar.  Our drop off date will be between the 15th & 19th.  Brochures will be in the Narthex again.

Saturday, October 16th the children will be having their hayride at the Jones’ Farm.  We will come back to the church for a doggie roast and pumpkin carving.  Permission slips and times will be sent home with the children the end of September.  Our rain date is set for October 23rd.

Our tentative date for our Christmas Program is set for December 5th during church.  More information at a later date.

We have 5 children enrolled for Cradle Roll.

The children are still being asked to bring in non-perishable foods for the boxes in their SS rooms.  Responses haven’t been too good in the past.  Hope this year is better.  Also everyone, keep saving those soda tabs for Ronald McDonald House. (soups, tuna fish, dog & cat food are also putting tabs on the lids – these are usable also)

We will still going downstairs the 3rd Sunday of the month for coffee hour.  At this time we will honor SS children’s birthdays for that month.

Please remember to return your SS offering banks if you wish.  We will take them anytime.  As of this writing we have received $100 in summer offering and an additional $14 for our “Helping Hands Fund”.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

From the library of Rev. Charles O. Leibig

v Friendship is always a sweet responsibility; never an opportunity.

v Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

v Anger and intolerance are the twin enemies of correct understanding.

v One moment of patience may ward off great disaster. One moment of impatience may ruin a whole life.

v The journey to happiness involves finding the courage to go down into ourselves and take responsibility for what’s there: all of it.

v Appreciate your ability to make up your mind to be happy and grateful for the simple things in life.

v Good timber does not grow with ease; the stronger the wind, the stronger the trees.

v Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

v Some, people no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty, they merely move it from their faces into their hearts.

v One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives.

v The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.

v You have the power to choose your own happiness. People, situations and events outside of yourself will affect you, but no one can give you happiness.

THANKSGIVING GIFTS

I thank thee for these gifts, dear God.

Upon Thanksgiving Day—

For love and laughter and the faith

That makes me kneel to pray.

For life that lends me happiness,

And sleep that gives me rest—

These are the gifts that keep my heart

Serene within my breast.

Love, laughter, faith, and life and sleep,

We own them, every one—

They carry us along the road

That leads from  sun to sun.
